The 7 Scents People Actually Stopped Me Over (My Honest Ranking)

July 20268 min read

I was in line for coffee, half asleep, scrolling my phone, when the woman behind me leaned in and said, "Okay, I have to ask, what are you wearing?" She was a total stranger. She had absolutely no reason to say anything nice to me at 7:40 in the morning. And that is exactly why I started paying attention.

A few days later it happened again, different scent, different stranger, same slightly stunned look on their face. So I opened the notes app on my phone and started a list. Not a wishlist, not a "smells I like" list, a list of the exact scents that made a real person stop what they were doing and comment, unprompted, out loud. That note grew for a few months. This is that list, ranked, and it is nothing like the ranking I would have written from taste alone.

Not my favorites. Not the most expensive. Just the ones that earned it.

Here is the one rule I held myself to for this whole list. It does not matter what I paid, and it does not even matter what I personally loved wearing. The only thing that counted was whether it pulled a genuine, unprompted reaction out of someone who had zero obligation to say anything at all. Not a friend being polite. Not someone I'd already told what I was wearing. A coworker at the printer. A stranger in an elevator. My dentist's receptionist, twice. I tracked it across ordinary weeks, work days, a couple of dinners out, one very unglamorous trip to the gym, and I just quietly kept score. Here is how it shook out, from seven down to the one that kept winning.

7

The fresh skin-musk

Clean, soft, the kind of thing that smells like a really good shower. It got me one "you smell nice" from a coworker, said the way you'd compliment someone's shoes.

The good: safe for the office, nobody's ever offended. The catch: too polite to actually register with anyone.
6

The jammy blackcurrant

Sweet, a little sharp, genuinely fun to wear. My sister asked what it was the first time, which felt promising, and then never again after that.

The good: instant compliment on a first wear. The catch: the novelty wears off fast, for them and for your nose.
5

The boozy vanilla

Warm and a little dangerous, the kind of thing that works after 7pm. Got a "wait, what is that" at a birthday dinner and I felt very pleased with myself.

The good: pulls a reaction the second you're close to someone. The catch: wrong for daylight, and it can read heavy in a small room.
4

The clean amber

Warm without being sweet, the closest thing to a year-round scent on this list. Got a genuine "you always smell so good" from someone who has known me for years, which counts for a lot.

The good: versatile, quietly noticed over and over. The catch: reliable, but it never once stopped a stranger in their tracks.

#3 and #2, so close I almost gave up on the list

3

The one that faded before the night got going

This one genuinely earned compliments, twice, both times in the first hour of wearing it. Then it just quietly checked out. By the time the night actually mattered, I was wearing nothing.

The good: a real, unprompted reaction, more than once. The catch: it clocks out right when you need it most.
2

The one that read a little loud

In a big open space this thing performs beautifully. Crammed into a small dinner table with four other people, it read a bit like I'd walked through a cloud of it, even though I hadn't overdone it at all.

The good: reliably noticed, no question. The catch: wrong scent for a small room, and I can't always control the room.

The one that kept showing up in my phone note, over and over

★ #1, and the only one still on my vanity ★

N°01 · Désir

Warm amber, dark vanilla, a soft skin-musk drydown

This is the one that made me start the note in the first place. Two drops at the pulse, nothing else, and people lean in. Not a jump-back, over-the-shoulder kind of notice, the closer kind. Someone standing near me at a counter. Someone I hugged goodbye who didn't let go right away. I am not going to tell you it guarantees anything, because it does not, attraction is not a formula and I would be lying if I said otherwise. What I can tell you is that this is the scent that got asked about the most, by the most different kinds of people, across the most ordinary days. That is the whole reason it sits at number one.

How I actually wear it

  1. Two drops on a fingertip. That's the entire dose, no more.
  2. Press to the pulse, one at the wrist, one at the base of the throat.
  3. Let your own skin warm it. It settles in and stays close into the night.
Why it beat everything above it: it is the only one on this list that got a genuine reaction from a stranger, a coworker, and someone who has known me for years, all in the same month. Warm, close, never loud, and it stayed with me from the moment I put it on until long after most scents would have quietly given up.
Full disclosure, since I'd rather you hear it from me than find out later: the team behind this blog is the same team that makes N°01. So yes, I am biased, and you should factor that in. But I tested this thing on my own skin over months, alongside everything else on this list, before it ever earned the top spot. This blog is run by the team behind KEMI, who make N°01 · «Désir». My ranking above is my own honest opinion, tested on my own skin. It is not an aggregate score pulled from anywhere else.

If you've never kept a list like this, I'd genuinely recommend it. Not for shopping, just for paying attention. You start to notice which scent is actually doing something on you versus which one you just like the idea of. For me, right now, that's the two-drop one. Try the ritual for yourself and see who leans in.

Nobody paid me to put this one at number one. It got there because it's the bottle that people keep asking me about.
